Our Project Group The Question we will be answering is, are we over fertilising the Irish Sea? We have been working in teams over the past weeks to bring you this exhibit. As we live in Liverpool we have chosen to work with water samples from Liverpool bay and the surrounding area to see if the Mersey River is over fertilising the Irish Sea. We are working with scientists and engineers from the Proudman Oceanography Lab part of the Natural Environment Research Council. We have been exploring some scientific processes including costal eutrophication and stratification. Did you know eutrophication is water pollution? This is when there is an increase of nutrients in the water. This can cause lots of damage to the sea as it can suffocate and kill the plants and animals. For example, turbulence in the water upset the phytoplankton which makes them move around the sea. Phytoplankton in the lower layer of the sea is mostly likely to die and decay. This causes less oxygen in the Irish Sea. This has a knock on effect to the rest of the marine life as they start to suffocate the plants and animals. So what do you think we should do??? |
